Post-colonialism: final blog tasks

1) Summarise the three theorists we have looked at: Alvarado, Fanon and Said.

Alvarado - 4 representations of the black community
Fanon - White mask
Said - West vs East

2) Watch the opening of Yasmin (2004) again. Does it offer a positive or negative view of British Muslims? To what extent does it reinforce or challenge Edward Said's theory of Orientalism - that the west is superior to the exotic or uncivilised east?

We see a positive view of British Muslims as they're fitting into society and we can see this by the young boy who is praying at the start and is wearing British clothing. This is rejecting the stereotypes we have of British Muslims although we see yasmin stuck between both cultures to fit into society. However, there is a man who is presented as being dirty and uncivilised which is the contrast between east and west which reinforced the negative stereotypes of British Muslims.

3) Finally, choose THREE clips for EACH of the theorists and explain how you could apply that theory to the clip. Pick a selection of clips on YouTube from TV, film, music video or advertising and embed them in your blog before writing your analysis under each clip. Note: this means you need NINE clips in total on this blogpost.

Alvarado

Representation of how black males are portrayed in society as being violent and part of gang culture in a urban environment.

Mainly black African Americans who are committing crimes and joining deviant gang subcultures and this is having an impact of reinforcing the negative stereotypes of black males.

Black males are humorous and used for entertainment purposes but also they're deviant and more likely to conform to violent behaviour.

Fanon

Black officers in South Central LA trying to fit into the white society by putting on a white mask and does so by targeting black males to be accepted.

Officer putting on a white mask to be accepted in the role he is in which is a police officer and ignores racial comments about black males and decides to act white.

One of the main characters is a well established author and this is predominantly a white male profession but is now got a black male and even though this is the case he still needs to behave in a certain mannerism.

Said

East are not civilised and we can see this when the father hits the mother and children and this is something that isn't accepted in British society.

The Americans are the hero and they're going to war to stop the war as they're fighting got the right cause and the East are the ones who are starting this and are terrorists which is why the US army is going to put a stop to this.

White male who is the hero in the film has to fight of people who are foreign and shows how they're not civilised as they're committing the crime and the white male who is civilised is going to fight back and keep peace.
