Identities: Feminism and new/digital media

Case study: Everyday Sexism

1) Why did Laura Bates start the Everyday Sexism project?

For people to explain and talk about the everyday issues that women face which links to Feminism still being required in today's society. Women and men are both able to talk about the issues that they face on a daily basis giving them a voice to open up about what is happening to them.
2) How does the Everyday Sexism project link to the concept of post-feminism? Is feminism still required in western societies?

It still shows that we need Feminism in today's society because women are still treated unfairly and the UK is positioned low in terms of equality between both sexes which highlights that even in western society and culture still positions women at the bottom which is a reason to still have Feminism.
3) How can you apply Judith Butler's theory of gender as a 'performance' to the creation of the Everyday Sexism project?

Women will be talking about the abuse that they receive which men are less likely to talk about or experience which will split both into groups of men and women where men and women are different who experience different things causing the gap between both sexes to grow making it hard to move into a post-feminist society.
4) How does Angela McRobbie's work on female empowerment link to the Everyday Sexism project?

Media Magazine: The fourth wave?

Read the article: The Fourth Wave? Feminism in the Digital Age in MM55 (p64)

1) Summarise the questions in the first two sub-headings: What is networked feminism? Why is it a problem?

The fourth wave of feminism is also known as networked feminism and tackles issues that women face everyday online. This is done with the use of social media websites and user generated content which allows feminists to tackle any issues faced online.

2) What are the four waves of feminism? Do you agree that we are in a fourth wave ‘networked feminism’?

1st wave feminists, the suffragette
2nd wave feminists, abortion being legal and equal pay between both sexes
3rd wave, post feminism, empowerment and the reclaiming of femininity
4th wave, technology to help with feminism

3) Focus on the examples in the article. Write a 100-word summary of EACH of the following: Everyday Sexism, HeForShe, FCKH8 campaign, This Girl Can.

Everyday Sexism - A campaign which started so women are able to express what they've experienced on a day to day basis in terms of sexism. The site was viewed by over thousands of women and they were able to tell people what they experienced and the different actions that they could take in order to feel safe and not objectified.

HeForShe - This was created by Emma Watson and was similar to the Everyday Sexism page but this ran on social media platform (Twitter) so people were able to ask questions about sexism that was faced on a day to day basis.

FCKH8 - All digital, the group focuses on the rights that females have received over the years and allowing women to be able to access what is right and what they're entitled to. It started to sell merchandise over a period of time rather than the whole idea of feminism due to a video of a girl promoting this which had went viral.

4) What is your opinion with regards to feminism and new/digital media? Do you agree with the concept of a 'fourth wave' of feminism post-2010 or are recent developments like the Everyday Sexism project merely an extension of the third wave of feminism from the 1990s?

I agree with the 4th wave because feminism is still needed in today's society. Rather than people expressing their views to a small amount of people they're able to do this online targeting a wider range of audience so that now if people who are vulnerable could have their ideology shaped by a few negative comments about women which is why feminism is needed.

Identities: Feminist theory and blog task

1) How might this video contribute to Butler’s idea that gender roles are a ‘performance’?

This would help reinforce the gender stereotype that women are the ones who perform the role of being a housewife and being attractive for their husbands. The video produces this theme throughout as Beyonce is the one who is cleaning up the house but performing that role of being attractive by the use of certain clothing being worn.

2) Would McRobbie view Beyonce as an empowering role model for women? Why?

I think she would because Beyonce hasn't just made songs which reinforce these gender stereotypes but has also lifted the position women are at and trying to challenge it,this can be seen in the song 'single ladies'. This song almost gives women the power and authority to do as they please and can pick any man they want.

3) What are your OWN views on this debate – does Beyonce empower women or reinforce the traditional ‘male gaze’ (Mulvey)?

I think that Beyonce is mocking the traditional gender stereotypes women face and the male gaze as she is one of the most powerful female artists who can get her voice heard by the public she can be a big influence. However, to some extent she is reinforcing the traditional male gaze with the lyrics of her songs and the way she dresses and performs.

Post-colonialism - bonus reading and tasks

M58: Social Media and Black Identity

Open up MM58 from our Media Magazine archive. Go to page 66 and readSocial Media and Black Identity then complete the following tasks:

1) List three theorists discussed in the article and what they believe regarding black identity.

Jenkins - social media is a place where other cultures can be seen

Harris - social media represents black people's negatively

Giddens - Black people are represented in a positive way.

2) In your opinion, is social media a positive or negative force when it comes to issues of black identity?

I think black people are presented in a good way as people try to talk about the issues black communities face and tries helping the issues.

3) How could you apply the post-colonial theories we have learned in class to the issue of social media and black identity?

Alvarado theory could he used as people believe that black people are criminals and therefore are a threat to society and we could also use fannon so people who are black put on a white mask in order to be seen as normal in society.
A Hustle for Life: Refugees in the Media

Now turn to page 6 and read A Hustle for Life: Refugees in the Media. When you have read the article, complete the following tasks:

1) What examples of different representations of refugees in the media are offered in the article?

They're presented as migrants which means they wanted to move according to choice and not because they had to inorder to survive which makes them seen as a negative part of society because people will start to hate them.

2) In your opinion, is the documentary genre more or less biased than the news media? What examples can you provide from the article to support your view?

I think that people will find this bias and people who are misinformed this will create a negative representation and people will see this as a part of their ideology.

3) How could you apply the post-colonial theories we have learned in class to the representation of refugees in the media?

Alvarado - people will feel sympathy for them because they're in trouble and in need of help.

Identities and the Media: Feminism

Media Magazine reading

1) Read Playing With The Past: Post-feminism and the Media (MM40, page 64 - our Media Magazine archive is here).

2) What are the two texts the article focuses on?

Pan Am
Beyonce

3) What examples are provided from the two texts of the 'male gaze' (Mulvey)?

Shot of the women's legs which will leave the audience interested and guessing who the female is. This will gain the attention from the male audience as a result.

Revealing clothing which the means that the women are presented more sexually and the men are now more intrigued to watch the video.

4) Do texts such as these show there is no longer a need for feminism or are they simply sexism in a different form?

To some extent because people are now accepting the role and using it as part of their sexual identity because they've accepted the roles given to them although it should be challenged if women aren't happy with this.

5) Choose three words/phrases from the glossary of the article and write their definitions on your blog.

Feminism – A movement aimed at defining, establishing, and defending women’s rights and equality to men

Patriarchy – An ideology that places men in a dominant position over women.

Third wave feminism – Was a movement that redefined and encouraged women to be dominant and sexually assertive.

No More Page 3

1) Research the No More Page 3 campaign. Who started it and why?

Lucy Ann Holmes started this campaign and it raised over 200,000 signatures

2) What reasons did the campaign give for why Page 3 had to go?

Children shouldn't see this
Boobs aren't news
Doesn't give females a positive representation of themselves
Sexualising women

3) Read this debate in the Guardian regarding whether the campaign should be dropped. What are Barbara Ellen and Susan Boniface's contrasting opinions in the debate?

Boniface argues that the page 3 should be removed because it's out of date and is something that should've moved on with the times.

Ellen says that it's reinforcing the male dominance and Sexualising female which makes them seem inferior to men.

4) The main campaign website has now been replaced by a site calledSexist News, designed to highlight sexism in the media. Give an example of a recent story the website has highlighted. Do you agree with the view of the website?

One example would be little mix on Britain's got talent, they decided to dress in a specific way which was seen to be sexual but the music that they were selling was to children and about love. This is seen as being controversial as people such as Adel have been seen to do the same thing but she doesn't present herself in a sexual way.

5) How can the No More Page 3 campaign and Sexist News website be linked to the idea of post-feminism?

Post feminists believe that we no longer need feminism and this links back as people are now being sexualised and rather than challenging it people are accepting it as a norm in socities traditional norms and values.

6) What are your OWN views on these campaigns? Do you agree with their aims? Is there still a need for these campaigns in the media?

I think feminism is still needed because there are a lot of issues and debates where women are inferior to men so even though people are fine with women being sexualised in music videos and films it still gives a negative representation and ideology to those in real life.

7) Finally, do you agree that we are in a post-feminist state or is there still a need for feminism?

I think we need feminism and society isn't past the stage of not having it because women still are inferior, face misogynistic comments and are still sexually assaulted.

Post-colonialism: final blog tasks

1) Summarise the three theorists we have looked at: Alvarado, Fanon and Said.

Alvarado - 4 representations of the black community
Fanon - White mask
Said - West vs East

2) Watch the opening of Yasmin (2004) again. Does it offer a positive or negative view of British Muslims? To what extent does it reinforce or challenge Edward Said's theory of Orientalism - that the west is superior to the exotic or uncivilised east?

We see a positive view of British Muslims as they're fitting into society and we can see this by the young boy who is praying at the start and is wearing British clothing. This is rejecting the stereotypes we have of British Muslims although we see yasmin stuck between both cultures to fit into society. However, there is a man who is presented as being dirty and uncivilised which is the contrast between east and west which reinforced the negative stereotypes of British Muslims.

3) Finally, choose THREE clips for EACH of the theorists and explain how you could apply that theory to the clip. Pick a selection of clips on YouTube from TV, film, music video or advertising and embed them in your blog before writing your analysis under each clip. Note: this means you need NINE clips in total on this blogpost.

Alvarado

Representation of how black males are portrayed in society as being violent and part of gang culture in a urban environment.

Mainly black African Americans who are committing crimes and joining deviant gang subcultures and this is having an impact of reinforcing the negative stereotypes of black males.

Black males are humorous and used for entertainment purposes but also they're deviant and more likely to conform to violent behaviour.

Fanon

Black officers in South Central LA trying to fit into the white society by putting on a white mask and does so by targeting black males to be accepted.

Officer putting on a white mask to be accepted in the role he is in which is a police officer and ignores racial comments about black males and decides to act white.

One of the main characters is a well established author and this is predominantly a white male profession but is now got a black male and even though this is the case he still needs to behave in a certain mannerism.

Said

East are not civilised and we can see this when the father hits the mother and children and this is something that isn't accepted in British society.

The Americans are the hero and they're going to war to stop the war as they're fighting got the right cause and the East are the ones who are starting this and are terrorists which is why the US army is going to put a stop to this.

White male who is the hero in the film has to fight of people who are foreign and shows how they're not civilised as they're committing the crime and the white male who is civilised is going to fight back and keep peace.

Weekly New/Digital Media Homework 03/02/17

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/feb/02/amazon-web-services-the-secret-to-the-online-retailers-future-success

Amazon has sold $32 billion worth of goods but there is now amazon Web services and is responsible for a tenth of their revenue.

Amazon are taking over and this would affect people who are working as they'll be losing their jobs due to Amazon selling things online more people will buy from them and not go to the shop so less people will be needed for work.

Twitter are giving a million dollars to stop Trump from banning refugees. Nearly a thousand twitter employees have given money to help support the cause of fighting the ban.

I think that this is a primary example of how social media has a positive impact on people and that life changing things it can help with. In this case it's benefiting a lot of people and because of Twitter it's possible to gain further support for this cause.

Gone too far fits Alvarados theory and fits into the category of humorous and exotic. This is seen by the traditional African clothing that is being worn by the mother and a more traditional thing that we see in today's society is the clothing of yemi. The humour of the film is based around the lifestyles and cultures clashing which is a key theme throughout the whole film.

Tight jeans also fits the theory as this is comedic but stereotypical that the youth are presented as being criminals due to their clothing and hanging out in the urban area which is commonly stereotyped in today's society by the media.
